Melted chocolate over cake

Chocolate & Caramel Ombre Cake

Let me start by saying that my recent obsession with baking cakes is, well, recent. I’ve never really baked. My mum didn’t love it when I was growing up. She would say it was too much effort for just a few minutes that the cakes would last, which is quite true. This isn’t to say that it was my mum’s fault. No, that’s not what I’m saying. I remember one day we baked a Tyrolean cake (or something like that, I’ve just translated literally from Spanish). I don’t remember what it had… Some ground almonds, and some spirits… It took us ages to bake it, and sure enough, it was gone pretty fast. We used to cook an orange spongecake, which took like five minutes to mix, and then maybe half an hour in the oven. That was easy enough to be cooked frequently. Anyway, for a couple of years now, I’ve tried baking bread with more or less success. I’ve also tried to bake several banana bread loaves, and even attempted to bake croissants …

Buttercream Pumpkin Cake

Are you over Halloween yet? Do you have time for just one more pumpkin recipe? It was Halloween last week, and people dressed up, carved pumpkins and had crazy amounts of alcohol (adults) and sweets (kids, but probably adults too!) In the end, I didn’t dress up. My plans for the evening fell through and I didn’t feel like making a huge effort to just go back home and take my make up off. Funnily enough, I ended up staying in a pub, but that’s a whole different story. Every year we have a carving competition at work. We ask people to let us know if they want to carve a pumpkin, and then we order them, so they can carve their decorations whenever they want and have them ready for us to judge (us, as in the social committee, of which I am part). This year Halloween fell on a Friday, and we were even luckier because it was a Friday drinks one. Basically, every other week we have drinks in one of the …

Nigella’s jumble berry crumble

It’s funny… I don’t like eating sweet stuff. Chocolate, cakes, biscuits… Not really my thing. However, I love baking. I guess that’s good news for my friends and colleagues, as that means I pretty much bake for them. Every now and again, I go into the kitchen and start experimenting, not always successfully! That apple cake was supposed to look much prettier, like the one featured here (found on Pinterest). However, I didn’t think things through properly… Ah, one day I’ll manage to bake croissants… in the meantime, I’ll have to keep buying them! At weekends, one of my favourite hobbies is to watch Nigella’s TV program on Food Network. I have no clue what it’s called, I just know that I love it! They normally show a few episodes at a time, one after another, and I have to say she’s one of my favourites. She makes cooking super easy and not over the top. Whenever she can use ready ingredients, she will. She always says that she’s quite lazy, so she wants to …

Apple Crumble

I always say that I don’t really have a sweet tooth. When people ask me if I like chocolate, my first answer is no. Then, I clarify that I don’t hate it, I just don’t feel like eating it, usually. Most people are surprised, and some have even told me I’m crazy. Fair enough. Usually, I don’t eat biscuits, or cake, or ice cream… None of those things. However, I like baking. I find baking very difficult, and I’m aware I’m not a good baker. I always struggle, mainly because I can’t follow basic instructions. OK, I can, I just choose not to. When I cook, I usually make my own interpretation of a recipe, either because I don’t have the exact ingredients, or because I’m too lazy to measure properly. My go-to technique is if a packet of something weights, for example, 250g and I only need 100g. I know half of the packet will be 125g, so I need a bit less than that. Of course, I sort of eye what half of …
