La Sylphide

As you know, I went to see La Sylphide at the English National Opera on Wednesday. It was my second ballet ever, and I loved it. Not too long ago, I wrote about my desire to do more cultural stuff, especially theatre visits and similar, and boy, have I taken it on board. I have booked a bunch of performances that I want to see. Life is too short, people! Su and I left the office at around 6pm and walked towards ENO, to avoid any problems because of the imminent Tube strike. We walked fast because we wanted to squeeze in a dinner before the show started at 7.30pm. While power-walking, we were trying to figure out where I could eat (hello, Whole37!). Finally, we decided to eat in Bella Italia, near the venue, because she could have pasta and I could have a simple salad with no weird ingredients. Food and workouts

It’s been a week of eating healthy, and I’m not really seeing what the big deal is so far. Sure, it involves a lot of planning (and I mean a lot) but… I don’t know. Maybe I’m not doing it right, or maybe I wasn’t doing it that bad before Whole30. I am finding some things more difficult than others, sure, like not being able to have a piece of toast, but I’m not getting any problems with the sugar dragon (wasn’t addicted to sugar before anyway), or having any major cold turkey situations (hmmm, turkey…). It’s true that lately I’m only seeing Papa John’s ads, which is quite annoying (especially when they have offers going on), and that even the chicken burger from that ad in which the kid “prepares” the perfect burger for his dad (because he’s the best) looks quite appealing, but meh. Whatever. So far, I’m not even craving Spanish omelette. It’s only been eight days for me, to be honest, and maybe everything is going to come at the same …

Back to square two

I still remember my snowboard instructor, when he said to us Can you see how difficult it is to get back up again? Yeah? So don’t fall!, and oh, it is so true. This can also be applied to getting back into fitness. Can’t you see how much it hurts to start again? Yeah? So don’t stop! As you know, it’s been months since my last incursion into a gym, or even the last time I laced up my running shoes. I’ve put on weight (being ill and low on energy results in sleeping a lot, and feeling a bit crappy overall results in over-eating, so you do the maths) and I’ve lost all strength and sense of achievement. When I told my friend Oummou about doing a professional photo shoot together, and she challenged me to be beach body ready for it, my first reaction was to think it was never really going to happen. Who are you going to believe in?

I know these past days (weeks) I’ve been a bit on the lower end of the happy scale. I’ve either complained a lot, or disappeared completely. Oops! One of the things I’ve noticed (and I’m sure it’s happened to many of you) is that when you don’t feel great, when your health isn’t what it’s supposed to be, your mind decides that it’s the best time to go in for the kill and really fail you. You start pointing all your flaws out to yourself, or you lose all your self-confidence, or whatever it is that gets your kicks, so to speak. It’s like we enjoy putting ourselves down when we’re already pretty low. Whenever I have the flu or a bad cold, and I’m in bed shivering, with temperature, coughing, sneezing, and overall in not a pretty state, I always notice how weak I’m feeling, and realise how fragile the human body is, and how little I can do to cure myself once I’m sick.
